100 Reasons
Scott February 12th, 2009
Wow! It’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything on my website worth mentioning to both of my loyal readers, and no person really has given me more crap about it than my lovely girlfriend Eileen. “When am I going to get a shout out on your webpage?!” she has asked on multiple occasions. In due time miss… in due time. Actually it wasn’t because I’ve been lazy that Eileen hasn’t been mentioned here, it’s just that (and I’ve told her this) that if I was going to give her a shout out, then I wanted to make this the shout of all shout outs, and I didn’t expect to do that in a night (or two nights, or even in a week). In fact below me is a list that has been 10 months and 7 days in the making: a list of reasons, memories, feelings, and experiences that have led me to believe that I am quite possibly the luckiest man alive. I would like to think this in part shows her just how much I love her, and at the very least, works as a satisfactory shout out ![]()
- “Reason Number ### Why I Love You” messages — What really inspired this whole post was something Eileen and I have done for a long time now where we send each messages to the liking of “…and that’s reason #768 why I love you”. As corny as it is, I really like getting those messages as much as I love sending them. The texts begged the question though: how many reasons could I really write down for loving someone as much as I do? I could certainly write more cliche reasons like “she’s smart” or “she’s funny” or “shes good looking” or whatever, which she is, but there should obviously be more than that when you feel like you have a deeper, more fundamental connection with someone. So on that note, I started writing this post and immediately found out that this was going to be a lot easier than I initially expected. It should be though when you have someone like my lady to write about.
- Thats What She Said — For those readers who aren’t cultured enough know what “Thats what she said” is, I highly suggest you go find the DVDs for one of the greatest shows on television right now, The Office. I won’t explain it here, but you can probably find an explanation of it pretty much anywhere, including here… Coined as the “most versatile joke on earth”, “Thats what she said” has provided hours of entertainment for Eileen and I (as well as probably thousand others). What I love most about it is the fact that Eileen (at least at the very start) was absolutely horrible at picking the moments to say the phrase, but she is learning, and actually picking up moments that I might have missed (very rare though). Let’s just say there is never a safe moment, and there is never a time not to be inappropriate, and I love her for that.
- Pumpkin Patch and Carving — A week before Halloween we took a trip to the pumpkin patch in search of good carving pumpkins… Although there was a huge table to pumpkins ready to be taken off the lot, we ended up actually spending some time in the patch and picking our own… There’s something about picking your own that makes the whole process just a tad more gratifying. We took the non-traditional approach (although increasingly more common) to carving our pumpkins, outlining and cutting out busts of Cinderella and Prince Charming… I don’t like to brag (much), but we basically had the best pumpkins I have ever seen.
- Traveler’s Inn — Warning: If you ever have to go through and stay in Eugene, Oregon, make it a point to make reservations well in advance. I am telling you people, this comes from first hand experience… On our way up to Seattle we failed to make reservations and because some guy from the Grateful Dead was in town, all the hotels were booked, except for the Traveler’s Inn, the nastiest, grossest hotel we have ever had the displeasure of staying in. Not only was our room dirty(that’s putting it mildly), we had to park at the local gas station because there was no parking, and the whole place smelled absolutely no disgusting. The kicker: the sheets were NOT white… If we had a shed of extra energy to drive to the next town, we would have… I am just glad I had someone to experience that hellhole with, or it would have been infinitely worse.
- Christmas Light Show — No, I am not talking about our failed attempt to get a light show going at ther house, because that wasn’t really my fault… the guys at the electronics store called me way too late regarding the parts I ordered so basically stood no chance in getting something ready… What I am really talking about is the Christmas light show Eileen introduced me to right in the heart of Redlands, and wow, what a show they put on… It was one of those shows that could have easily been up on Youtube (did we ever find out if it was?). I think we watched a couple times in a row before we left… Only gives me inspiration for us to start much sooner than we did last year (1 week isn’t enough to build a light show with the crazy schedules we lead).
- Trash TV — Prior to meeting Eileen, I think there were maybe 2 or 3 shows I watched regularly, those being American Idol, Lost, and then the occasional DVD TV series. Now, I can tell anyone all about Dog the Bounty Hunter, Bridezillas, Intervention, Dr. Phil, Tool Academy, Oprah, Rock of Love, shall I go on? My TV watching has gone through the roof, and as much as I complain to her about it, I still love the fact that she sticks to it, and has actually made me a convert on several shows I would have either never known about, or would have never even given a second thought to. Plus, in the event that someone starts talking about one of those shows (which apparently isn’t unlikely), I have an immediate in into the conversation. Its good to be “cultured”… in the loosest sense
- Exercise Partner — Whether it’s running several miles up steep hills or to University of Redlands or getting rocked at a weight lifting class dominated by women (real men do endurance weight lifting classes), I know that Eileen is always ready for a challenge. I love the fact that she is active and continues to stay active despite not being in her cheerleading sport anymore (yes, it is a sport, I can definitely attest to that)… We have several 5K runs on the horizon, and I am excited to see where those take us…
- Can You Really Differentiate Green M&Ms? — One of our earlier conversations drifted into the “fact” that green M&M’s taste so much better than all the other color M&Ms, according to Eileen that is. So, in the interest of scientific advancement and discovery, I held the first annual “Can you differentiate green M&Ms” experiment at my apartment in May of 2008… The conclusion? I really don’t think she could tell the difference at all, but I have since encouraged her by buying her green and gold M&Ms for her birthday (see Golden Birthday), and just recently a bag of green Valentine’s M&Ms (which honestly I think I ended up eating most of them).
- Bringing Back Nimrod — I don’t remember when or why it came up, but I think I was telling Eileen about my buddy Scott’s use of the phrase “Moted!” (remember that one? to be honest I never knew where that term came from until I just looked it up) and she told me that wanted to bring back the word “nimrod”(probably the second definition)… Completely random, but hilarious… Every once in a while it comes out again followed by the need to tell everyone that she wants to bring that word back
- Teaching Me How to Line Dance — My only real experience line dancing prior to meeting Eileen came in 8th grade when for about two weeks our P.E class had to do line dancing, and then when I became of age to drink several times at the Brandin’ Iron attempting to dance after several beverages… neither a pretty sight… But, on our second date, Eileen brought the “tunage” as she appropriately called it and she taught me several line dances, including the two step and the Cowboy Cha-Cha… Although I have to admit the Cowboy Cha Cha is fairly easy for the guy, it is still one of my favorite dances to do with Eileen… We even impressed my old boss Rich at the Sub Station Christmas party with our “expertise”. Needless to say I am by far not the most graceful person at the Brandin’ Iron when we go line dancing, but I think I am respectable, and I owe that all to Eileen.
- Our Scrapbooks — Over the course of my 25 year life (which doesn’t round up to 30 years btw), I have some received some pretty nice presents, but I’d have to say the best thing I have ever received came to me in a big box in Seattle last summer. Eileen had been telling me for weeks how much I was going to like the present she got me, and so the bar was set really high when the beast of a box showed up at my door… On one hand, I remember wondering if this was going to be a scrapbook because I myself had made Eileen a kind of scrapbook for her birthday (which was coming up in a few weeks), but on the other hand, the box was wrapped so much differently than I would have expected for a scrapbook that that idea kind of went over my head. (Funny story: the scrapbook I made for Eileen and Eileen’s scrapbook she made for me both came on the same day). I waited all day on my birthday to open it, and I couldn’t have been more happy… This was the scrapbook of all scrapbooks. The effort to make it showed as Eileen captured every thing we had done until that time, even our road trip to Seattle. I was blown away, but at the same time thinking in the back of my mind, uh oh, now I have to give her the scrapbook I made… how is that going to go over?! Well, two weeks later, she received her version of the scrapbook and I think she loved it just as much. It’s funny, we had been together for about three months at the time, and our choice of birthday presents for each other clearly showed we would be together for a long time
Greatest birthday present ever. - Up Dog — “Whats up dog?” people ask us when we add “Up Dog” into a normal conversation. “Nothing, whats up with you?” (insert rimshot here)… Probably the second most versatile joke on earth. From our perfect setups of the joke on people like Eva and Eileen’s brother, to our epic attempts on people like Eileen’s aunt, who required us to say it at least 10 times over the course of several months before she finally asked us what we were saying… it’s one of those jokes that we will always have and will remember using with my lady
- Wheelbarrow — Occasionally when the opportunity presents itself, I will grab Eileen’s legs and attempt to walk her around the living room or wherever we are… Although she claims not to like it too much, she always does it laughing hysterically, and I love it. It’s so much better being the person walking the wheelbarrow than being the wheelbarrow though
- Happy Birthday Song — Anyone who has known Eileen for a while knows she does an unbelievable rendition of the happy birthday song, complete with a fantastic dance that will leave anyone speechless (or dying of laughter)… Seriously, you probably haven’t seen anything like it. What was funny was prior to my birthday I had heard about it several times but didn’t get the privilege to hear it until my birthday actually came around, and wow I wasn’t disappointed. The song has now been captured and is my ring tone for when the princess calls… Future plans: American Idol audition with that song and dance… Guaranteed TV time.
- Triple Chocolate Brownies — I am a sucker for brownies… On our first date, I convinced Eileen that if she would make me brownies, I would cook dinner for her, so her answer to that was to make the bombest brownies ever. Imagine the best brownie you have ever had, and then add an extra layer of deliciousness in the form of cinnamon frosting on top. Wow! Talk about a chocolate orgasm
We’ve made them a few times since then, and they always remind me of the first night and how impressed I was (despite her being super nervous at my apartment)… - Team Mom — I have to admit that I was actually kind of scared the first time I ever invited Eileen to one of my intramural football games… Although its only for fun, as a guy you kind of get this sense that you need to show your dominance in whatever sport you play, even if you have never really played before. I am actually really glad I invited her though, because she seemed to really enjoy it, and the fact that she actually knows about football is another plus. In fact, Eileen has pretty much come to all our games now, and has been rewarded with our team’s highest honor by being designated the “Team Mom” because of her service in keeping everyone fed after the games
She’s even got a tshirt that has her title on it, so it’s pretty official… - A Summer of Ichatting — As much as I hated leaving Eileen this past summer to go to Seattle, something that kept me remotely sane was the fact that both Eileen and I had Macs, and got to use the incredible video ichat features built into the incredible system (I don’t own Apple stock, but I do love Apple and all Apple products). I remember the first few nights when I was there we talked on the phone, and while that was nice, the 3rd night when we first iChat it was like “Wow! I think I am going to be able to make it thru the summer”. Seriously, I don’t know what would have happened if we didn’t have that, and I am appreciative that I live in a time where even though we were 1,300 miles away from each other, I could still see her laying her bed each and every night. Pretty much every night we would set up an iChat date at like 8 or 9 at night and talk until one of us went to sleep. I hated being away from her, but iChat really made it a lot easier.
- Peppermint Present — Although Eileen always gives me crap for eating peppermints all the time, especially the chocolate peppermints, which I think she thinks I steal from restaurants or something, she still brought me a big bag of them when she came to visit me in Seattle last summer because she knew I was out of them and that I didn’t know where to find them there. If that isn’t love, I don’t know what is…
- “You are the strangest person I ever met” — I don’t think I will ever find a saying or quote or anything that sums up our relationship as well this painting I bought Eileen in Seattle called “Kindred Spirits”. I remember we actually both saw the painting on our first or second day in Seattle independently at a downtown store and realizing how perfect this was… “‘Your the strangest person I’ve ever met’, and she said ‘You too’…” So we decided to know each other for a long time
- Dip Dottable — On our first date, I couldn’t tell whether Eileen was especially nervous (maybe she’s never talked with someone that had the movie star quality about him) or she had A.D.D, but after she finished her coffee she started tearing her cup into shreds and then making a mound of little pieces of styrofoam… It looked like those dipping dots (the ice cream of the future!) that you get at amusement parks, and I hence started using the term “dip-dottable” to refer to shredding things up into a neat pile…. It’s a real word you know…
- Kerry Park — One of my more favorite pictures that Eileen and I have taken (and we have taken a lot!) is one of us at Kerry Park in Seattle, WA. For those who aren’t in the know, Kerry Park is basically a strip of grass in the Queen Anne neighborhood that has quite possibly one of the best overlooks of the city skyline ever… It’s actually quite an adventure to get there, especially when you have as terrible of a car as I do. I seriously didn’t think we were going to make it because the hill to get to the park is comparable to some of the steeper hills in San Francisco, and really did a number on my car. I’m guessing that if I had stopped at any of the so called stop signs my car would have broken down and we would have been screwed. But rest assured, we made it and the picture says it all…
- Email Forwards — Sometimes there’s nothing better than a good funny email forward to spruce up what has been a terrible morning or frustrating afternoon. Whether its a top ten things to do at Walmart, or a big list of questions she has filled out, Eileen always seems to filter out the crap ones I usually get and serve me the best quality email forward an email box can get
- Snooze! — Eileen introduced me to the concept of the snooze button, and while I still don’t quite get the logic of the entire thing, I love her one word argument and subsequent conclusion when I make any attempt on getting rid of the snooze stuff. Here is is: “Snooze!” Argument ended, and I lost.
- Her Mom — You have to love a lady that introduces me with variants of the phrase “This is Eileen’s boyfriend Scott… He lies” to new people I’ve never met. In all seriousness though, Eileen’s mom has been nothing but great to me… She has welcomed me into her home and into her and her daughter’s life, and I couldn’t ask for more. We have a fun relationship that is built on a foundation of joking around (which she translated to me lying
), and its makes every day I am at their house an adventure. - Prom Night — Back in I think was late May of last year, we decided to dress up really nice and go out for a fancy dinner date, a prom night of sorts. We made reservations for the Mission Inn restaurant in downtown Riverside a few days before, learned how to tie a tie via Youtube the morning of, and had an incredible night. There was alcohol at the President’s Bar there, and there was even dancing when we got back (to the tune of some of the songs that will be mentioned later). One of my favorite parts of the night: going exploring around the Mission Inn hotel grounds and trying to convince Eileen to go into of the empty and open hotel suites on the top floor.
- Photobooth — Some of our greatest photography work has come directly from the Mac source in the form of Photobooth. In fact, I think Eileen (as well as myself) would probably say our favorite picture was taken while were being dumb using Photobooth… its one of those pictures that captures our relationship just perfectly. What is Photobooth you ask? Get a Mac… We got Eileen one very early in our relationship and spent the entire first afternoon playing with this program.
- Self Portraits — I suppose it’s quite natural that with digital cameras comes the oppotunity to take an infinite amount of pictures, and that means people will invariably take self portraits. Well, Eileen has taken the art of the self portrait to the level of a science, perfecting her craft like no one I have ever seen. If there is a camera around, rest assured Eileen will have her way with it and you will probably be blessed with one or two of her closeups. Hey, I’m not complaining…
- Eye Goobers — While I’d like to think that Eileen cleaning out my eyes every morning is a sign of undying affection, she then proceeds to do the same thing to her cats. Oh well, I still love it…
- Eileenism’s — Whats an “Eileenism” you ask? Random sayings that I don’t I have ever heard anyone else say but her. The first one I remember getting was in our first email conversation(keep in mind, this was before I met her) and that was “Eat Butt”… Charming
So, in no particular order, I have compiled some of her greatest sayings, and present them here, not only because I think they are great, but because I love the fact that these in a way define her and her personality.
- Ding Dang
- Eat Butt
- Suck it!
- Noted…
- To be determined…
- Snaps!
- That’s messed up.
- Sick!
- Debatable
- Later gator
- Cash Machine
- Low Kick!
- ‘tard
- Thats so diculous its ridiculous
- “You Never Listen to Me!” — So goes the epic cry I hear on almost a daily basis, because as she might be led to believe, I never to listen to her… I hope she knows quite the opposite is true though, and I hope seeing a list like this serves as some sort of proof for that as well. In fact, I’ve never listened to anyone more than her, and can tell anyone and everyone anything about her, including another list of 100 things I love about her
- Todo List — Starting very early in our relationship we were doing so many things and thinking of so many things to do next it became hard to remember exactly what we talked about even just days prior. Our solution… the todo list, a small whiteboard that (used to) sits on Eileen’s door where we could write down anything and everything we’ve thought of to do on days where restlessness kicks in… We’re movers and shakers, but movers and shakers still need a way to keep track of where they be moving and shaking too…
- Disneyland Season Passes — In the past year, I have gone to Disneyland more than all the times I have ever gone in my life. In fact, prior to our purchase of Disneyland season passes in June 2008, I hadn’t been since I htink 8th grade! Wow, you really start to realize how Southern Californians take for granted the fact that all these great things exist so close to home. That being said, I’ve also realized how infinitely better Disneyland is when you have a princess on your arm… no need to go stand in the line to meet the quote unqoute “real princesses”… We’ve already have had some great times there, and figuring out that California Adventure sells margaritas has been an added bonus. I am still in the process of convincing Eileen that we should go on Tower of Terror though… my prospects aren’t looking too good
- Climb to the C — High above UC Riverside there is a big ‘C’ (stands for California) sitting on the small mountain just beyond the campus. One of my more regular activities is to climb up there as a form of exercise, but also for the great view. It took me a while but I finally got Eileen to take the dreaded trek up there in January. While I don’t she was particularly thrilled in going up there, I was really proud and quite frankly impressed at how well she did going up… “Only a little ways further! This hill is much easier than the last one! ”
- Fondue — My first experience with fondue was with Eileen at the Melting Pot last July… We ate like royalty, with cheese and meat courses, followed by dessert. Eileen had told me about this place several times before, and although I had heard of it, I had never really bought into the “lets go to a restaurant and make our own food!” vibe… But needless to say, the experience was amazing, and we have since gotten our fondue pot which we have used several times now. Our first home fondue making experience was less than desirable though, as we ended up using the chocolate from little Snickers bars, and it ends looking like baby crap, nuts and all
Gross I know, but our attempts after that definitely stayed away from the candy bar side of things, and have been really good. - Astroblasters Photoshopping — Disneyland has this Astroblasters game where you are actually in a competition with the person in your car… Well, I had never been on that ride before so I didn’t realize it was a competition until it was too late… Eileen had already racked up way too many points for me to catch up, so I did what any respectable computer science major would have done… I photoshopped the results picture to show that I won… Genius
What I loved was her response was to immortalize the real picture and my picture into our scrapbook with the captions “What actually happened” and “What he thought happened”… Also genius
- The Autism Voice — On our first trip to Disneyland, Eileen was telling me that when she went with her cheerleaders that some of the girls faked being handicapped to get to the front of the ride, including faking autism… I immediately responded with a comment in my best austism voice my friend in high school always said, “My mom says I’m autistic, but I can’t draw”. It’s bad, really bad, but admittedly its pretty funny, and the laugh I get from Eileen every time I do it is priceless.
- Her Friends — Lets go back about 9 months ago… so I’ve met a girl who has so far has been perfect… now she wants me to meet her friends. Great. This is where it ends; I am going to hate her friends and this is where there is finally going to be a hiccup. Probably a little too dramatic, but it was something that I definitely thought about before meeting some of her best friends, her BFF and BFFL (yes, there is a difference, one I quite don’t understand yet, and maybe never will). Truth is, Eileen’s friends couldn’t have been better and instantly welcomed me into the club (I suppose you probably have to though after one of her friends almost threw up on me the first night… shout out to Summer!!) I am privileged to think that her friends think highly of me as well because that is actually very important to me.
- Scrapbooking — Although we have only done this once together so far because Eileen doesn’t think I enjoy it, I actually had a good experience trying to creatively capture the things we do… One of the neat things about my scrapbook present is the fact that you can always add to it, and the experience of adding to it and relooking at old pictures together is always fun… Next scrapbook page to make: Pictures of us scrapbooking…
- “Oh, Eskimo Your Nose…” — A line out of Jason Mraz’s “Butterfly”, Eileen is fond of eskimoing(is this a verb?) my nose and then getting her face as close as she can to mine and simply saying “Sing it…” My response is to sing that now famous line back to her… I love it.
- The State License Game — Have you ever heard of the game where if you see an out of state license plate and you call it out you get to punch the other person playing? Me neither. Yet Eileen insisted this was a real game, and punched me several times early in the relationship without me realizing what exactly was going on. But, I caught on, and it so has it that made for a good time spender on both our way to Seattle and our way back. We even have our score tally immortalized in the scrapbook combined with all the states we actually saw. As entertaining and fun as I am to be around, I find it hard to entertain for 8-12 hours in a row, so Eileen’s game made my presence bearable. She cheats though… big time.
- “In Case You’re Weird” — Just prior to our first date, Eileen and I were discussing via email when/where we were going to meet. My response: “How about we just meet for coffee so that in case you’re weird I have an easy out…” “Whaattt?!” she says… She still mentions that one line partly because I think she thought it was funny, and partly because I think it attracted her in some strange way… Either way, I am glad that she responded well to it.
- The Eileen’s — I remember very well walking through the Ghiradelli Square area in San Francisco and Eileen talking about her desire to create her own shoe line… Her desire coupled with my electronics experience drove the idea of ‘The Eileens’ aka ‘SIC’s (Suck it Christian). The Eileen’s would be some sort of heel shoe completely covered in very small LEDs. The software to control the LEDs would then make the LED’s look like they were shimmering… Electronic ruby slippers. You heard it here first folks…
- The Three ‘C’s — Cut, Carat, and Clarity: I think I may be one of the few guys who knows what the 3 C’s means in the context of buying a wedding ring, as I have been reminded several times in the last few months. Of course I owe those knowledge gems (pun intended) to none other than my princess… I am just wondering how well the rings you get in your Cracker Jacks that I plan on giving her at some point do on the 3 C’s scale… High marks in at least 2 of the C’s right?!
- Chocolate Lava Cake — I honestly don’t think there is anything better than thinking you are going to be eating a cake and then when you stick your fork in it, the insides come oozing out… I give you the chocolate lava cake, one of several delicacies Eileen has introduced me to, and one which we have attempted to make on several occasions. This summer I practiced in Seattle and made a really good lava cake, and then on her birthday for the real attempt, I don’t know what happened. I think the only thing that saved me were the golden shavings on the cake… that, and it still did taste pretty damn good.
- Hamburger Doll — In my apartment I have a little porcelain multi-colored cow (don’t ask me why) that used to sit by my bed. Well, one day, Eileen decided she didn’t like my cow (who I had named Hamburger) and so she kicked it off the table, breaking one of its legs… I am not sure whether she felt sorry for the cow, or sorry that she broke it, but she took it home and repaired him to almost perfect health. She even sent me a picture text message letting me know that he was ok. Of course, Hamburger wants nothing to do with her anymore and is scared evertime she comes within 10 feet, but both he and I love the fact Eileen took the initative to actually fix him up.
- Back Spots — Have you ever been to a Brookstone’s or some store like that and they have the ultra expensive massage chairs that hit several points on your back so perfect that they almost make your back spasm? Those are what scientifically known as your “back spots”, and Eileen has a knack for intuitively knowing where mine are. Its incredible…
- Six Word Memoirs — A six word memoir is a an attempt at writing something incredibly profound and deep about your life, your philosophy, your whatever, in just six words. It’s a fun exercise, and I suggest everyone try it… In any case, Eileen and I spent an entire afternoon one day sending each other six word memoirs back and forth about each other. Although I don’t have any of them on my phone anymore (dumb size limit), I do remember one of my favorites about Eileen: “Deluded princess who never stops believin” Good times…
- Staring Problem — Have you ever been at a bar, or a concert, or the bookstore talking with one of your friends and you guys get the feeling that someone is peering over your shoulder listening to every single private word you are saying? That someone is Eileen
She has a self-admitted “staring problem”, but is absolutely hilarious… To give her some credit, she does conceal her eavesdropping ability pretty well, and she invariable has a fun story to tell me about the conversation she was listening to… I consider myself an engaging conversationalist, but there is something about someone else’s conversation that usually triggers Eileen to drift off other directions. Its great . - Picky Eater — For a long time I have been given crap by friends and family for being picky when it comes to ordering things at fast food places… So what if I don’t want mayonnaise, or I want extra this or that? I am paying for it; I should get it my way… the Burger King philosophy. In Eileen I met someone who not only doesn’t bug me about me being a picky eater, but who is quite arguably more picky than I am! In her book, any sandwich only gets meat and light lettuce, with mustard on the side… and regardless of which restaurant we go to, I am about 90% positive I can guess what she is going to get, complete with all the reworkings of the original menu item… We are two of a kind.
- Towel Snapping — This started really early, probably even the second date, and probably as means to loosen up because we were both somewhat nervous (although Eileen has to admit she was more nervous than I was, both on the first and second dates)… Although she used to be pretty pathetic at snapping a towel, she has definitely come around and made some not so nice red marks on my skin… No blood though
- Listening to Me Play the Piano — While I love to piano even though I am not very good, I get very nervous and quiet when asked to play in front of people, and Eileen is no exception. Even though I’ve known her for almost a year now, I still get nervous playing front of her. It definitely eases me to think that she actually enjoys my performances and is proud of me for doing them every once in a while, especially when the performances are of some of our favorite songs…
- Key Dishes — I am seriously going to be an absent minded professor… I leave my things all over the place without thinking about it, and then waste my time looking for those things, my keys and wallet being the major contributors to my lost time… Eileen, in an attempt to recover some of my eventual lost time, made me a dish at Color Me Mine that sits on her dresser where I get to keep all the essentials, and with maybe one exception, I don’t think I have lost any of my things at her house since then, and I love that…
- Countdown Widgets During Summer — “How much longer until you come home?!” Eileen would ask on just about a daily basis when I was in Seattle last summer… I can tell you exactly how long, courtesy of an Apple widget
This past summer Eileen and I got to meet three times, and prior to each of those, I took advantage of Apple’s widget maker to make countdown widgets for us, complete with some of our favorite pictures. It was a nice little reminder that there was only W days, X hours, and Y minutes, and Z seconds until I got to see my princess. Admittedly it was kind of depressing to see the countdown show 19 days or something really long, but in the long run, I think they helped out a lot… - Fly me to the Moon at the Bellagio — The first time I heard Fly Me to the Moon with Eileen was at the water show at the Bellagio in Las Vegas… it was one of those moments where the song now instantly reminds me of her and that exact moment because it was so perfect… What makes that night and that song even more memorable was we started walking the strip afterwards and going into several hotels, and we heard that song twice more in the form of lounge songs in less than an hour… Now granted that song is probably played everywhere in Vegas because of the Sinatra connection, but there was something about that night which will make me remember it for a long time… at least until I start losing my memory
- Fun Fact: Shania’s Real Name Is: — Eileen. Yep. I’ve heard it dozens of times and rest assured I will hear it plenty more after this. It usually comes when we see her picture or hear one of her songs, but what was funny is when I was on my flight to Atlanta the airplane had an online quiz going, and I was one of the very few ( I think 1 of 2) to know that Shania’s real name was Eileen when that question came up. 5000 points!
- Corrects my grammar — You can only expect so much from someone who graduated with an English degree… The usual one I get is my admitted misuse of the word “good” when it should have been “well”, but there have been others which I can’t immediately think of which she has caught me on. Not to say she isn’t perfect either, because she can mispronounces words, like “library” and “ornery”.
- First Facebook Conversation — You can ask a lot of couples what attracted them to their significant other and when they realized this person might actually work with me, and I don’t think any of them will tell you it happened before they even met… But that exact thing happened to me… To give a one sentence background, Eileen and I are were set up by my mom and her best friend, and that led to a memorable email(technically Facebook) conversation that I was not expecting at all. I did everything I could to push her buttons, and not only did she hold her ground, she pushed mine back… Even after we started dating for a while, I know we both still read those first conversations because they were both funny and really showed how alike we really are.
- Giving Me Crap For Closing My Eyes in Pics — So its true… I am definitely not the most photogenic person in the world, and when you compare to someone like Eileen, the problem is exacerbated even more… I admit, sometimes I do accidentally close my eyes when we take pictures. Eileen claims that it happens every time though. Not true… We literally over a thousand pictures of things we’ve done now, and a very small percentage show me closing my eyes… I applaud her effort though
- “In My Next Life, I Am Not Going to Care, And I Am Going to Be Selfish” — Eileen is probably one of the most responsible, altruistic, caring, non-selfish people I know, but sometimes she seems to get frustrated with what I think is why everyone isn’t like her… The truth is its because there is no one like her, and that’s why I love her to death.
- Bakers — People used to ask me how I was able to eat at Sub Station so much, which admittedly was about two times a day when I was an undergraduate, and probably closer to once a day now… Eileen was one of the first people I didn’t have to explain myself to because she herself has Baker’s as her Sub Station equivalent… Now, because of her and her family, I’ve eaten at Bakers more in the last year than I have ever eaten there, and I thought I ate there alot during high school. They have a bomb chicken sandwich that Eileen has gotten me hooked on, and now I am somewhat of a regular at two places…
- Schrute Bucks — Last month I faxed Eileen a Schrute Buck to her work to commend on here on a job well done at her new office… The reason why I put this on here as one of my hundred reasons is because Eileen had a sincere appreciation in her email to say thanks for making her laugh, and its the reason why I love doing those kind of things… Oh, and for those who are uninformed, a Schrute Buck was a ridiculous motivational tool used in the Office TV show where if you received 1000 of them then you got five extra minutes of lunch… Only 999 more Eileen!
- Peach Amaretto Bread Pudding — I think this was one of our more involved dessert adventures… partly because we also attempted to make our own ice cream to complement the bread pudding (that didn’t come out of a plastic bag). What resulted was one of our finer creations at the time, and something I think we were both pretty impressed by; it’s hard being us sometimes, sexy and good cooks; hmm… we should draft up some show ideas for the Food Network.
- The Box in the Closet — holds some of the most valuable items from around the western part of the country… the playbill from Wicked at Pantages theater, the menu from the Black Bear Grill in Oregon/Washington, matches from the Ghost Bar in Las Vegas, and a ton of other stuff… I guess I should qualified the ‘valuable’ adjective with the fact that these things are valuable to me and Eileen, and probably only us… I love the fact that she has kept this stuff from basically the beginning though; it really means a lot to me. Hmm… I wonder if her destroyed coffee cup from our first date is in there; I’ll have to check when she’s not around.
- The Police Sound She Makes — This one is actually kind of hard to explain without sounding dumb, so I am going to leave my readers with Eileen can do a spot on (kind of) police siren noise that is actually really loud and obnoxious, but hilarious at the same time… Always good for a cheap laugh
- Road Trips — Its really nice to know that 1) I have a girlfriend who enjoys roadtrips and likes traveling places, and 2)during our roadtrips, we can entertain each other… I don’t think there could be anything worse than going on a roadtrip and having someone who doesn’t enjoy it and/or can’t contribute to the entertainment. We’ve only been on two road trips so far, one to Seattle where we went through San Francisco and Eugene (never again), and then on our way back from Seattle, where we took the scenic route through Idaho and Utah so we could stay in Vegas… Both of those trips were some of the best of my life. We had so many interesting encounters in such a short amount of time, from the guy in Oregon dressed in a women’s dress filling up our gas station to trying to stop at every state sign to get pictures (and Eileen pulling a hand stand near one of them), I can only imagine how much fun our next one is going to be.
- American Idol — I chose to separate this show from the rest of the trash TV shows discusses earlier for two reasons… 1. It is not trash TV and 2. Its one of the few shows that I have actually introduced into Eileen’s schedule. Although Eileen may or may not have watched the show every once in a while before meeting me, she now watches it every week with me as if it were always part of her regular TV show lineup, and I like that. She even goes so far as to record it for me when I forget to record it; That’s what having a great girlfriend is all about…
- Good Morning Emails — I think its going to be hard to explain how great it is to get to school and to almost know there will be an email from Eileen saying good morning. It doesn’t have to say anything else and yet its quite possibly the best way to start my day.
- My Coffee Mug — For Christmas this last year, Eileen and I promised each other to only spend a maximum of twenty dollars on each because we had already bought a hammock together and money was sort of tight. In any case, she actually completely surprised me by making me a coffee mug completely covered by some of our more recent pictures we had taken. What’s interesting is I had actually helped her make some of the other mugs she had made for some of her friends, and I didn’t expect in the least that that’s what she was making me… How that escape me I don’t know, but pretty clever
I am a big fan of meaningful gifts, and usually give people no clue as to what I want, and Eileen again rocked it with the Christmas present this year. - Youtube Video Comments — When I first started putting up Youtube videos, Eileen was one of the first people to comment on one of them and tell me how proud she was for singing the entire song and posting it up for her… That really meant a lot.
- Not afraid To Give People a Piece of Her Mind — I love Eileen’s assertiveness with people in service industries, whether its at a restaurant, car dealership, whatever… it’s really nice to be with someone who has a high level of confidence and knows that she deserves a certain amount of respect. Case in point: we were at the Ford dealership a few months ago, and Eileen was looking at Mustangs. The what can only be described as incredibly sexist dealer comes over and starts asking me, not her, what kind of car she’s interested in. He continues to make it worse until Eileen decided to politely tell him off and we left. She was pissed, but I was really impressed that she stood up to him…
- Piggy Back Rides — Eileen has caught on now, but she kind of knows that anytime we are standing up, and especially around her house, that she runs the risk of getting a free piggyback ride from me, whether she likes it or not… She says she doesn’t like it, but I get conflicting signals when shes laughing so hard, so the piggyback rides will continue
- Karaoke Star at Rich’s House — There’s nothing better in breaking the ice with a group of people that you don’t know and busting out with an awesome version of “Beat It” (complete with the dance at the chorus), and Eileen did exactly that… Star of the party… so much that that moment is now captured in time and up on the Hall of Fame wall at Sub Station.
- Laguna Beach Surprise Trip — “I don’t like surprises”, Eileen tells me constantly… But at the start of our relationship I really didn’t know that, so I planned a surprise evening getaway to Laguna Beach to walk around, eat, and enjoy the beach life for a few hours… Problem was, because I didn’t tell her where we were going, she wore boots which made a beach walk somewhat difficult… so difficult in fact that I will be blamed until the end of time for “ruining” her boots… She messed up my jeans though, so I felt we were even… The Laguna Beach night was also the first time we took a picture together, which although a good picture, is slightly blurry because I think the guy taking it was drunk or something
- Monte Cristo Sandwiches — Probably one of my favorite movie nights Eileen and I put together started when I told Eileen I would make dinner at my apartment, and that I was going to pick a themed movie. It actually took me a while to come up with something, but I suddenly remembered The Count of Monte Cristo (One of the best movies ever. Do yourself a favor a go buy it)… The dinner choice was obvious, and we delivered a feast Emeril would have been proud of. AND, in our objective opinions, we think our work that night was better than even the Disneyland chefs could pull off, and a lot cheaper too.
- Funny Tshirts — As much as Eileen likes to make fun of me or define me for having funny tshirts, I think she enjoys them and sees as much humor in them as I do… Case in point… I think she owns just as many as I do, and even talks about getting the Jessie Spano “Im so excited! I’m so scared!” tshirt every time I look at the BustedTees website. Eileen also the the “Department of Redundancy Department” tshirt, which I absolutely love, and which I would buy, but, for a lack of a better term, it would be, well, redundant.
- UFC Fight night and Staged Wine Glass Pics — One of my favorite pictures of Eileen and I (which is sitting right in front of me as I write this) came early in our relationship at a UFC fight party at Sean and Eva’s house. We both had several glasses of wine and the camera was out, and I wanted a new picture with my lady… so we did what any two self respecting adults would do… we staged a photo op with a fun wine toast… In the picture I remember making the smirk on my face only because Eileen was laughing so hard (for no apparent reason)… Regardless of the actual realness of the moment, the picture will probably continue to be one of my all time favorites…
- Halloween Costumes — What do you get when you have a girl who lives the royal princess life, and a guy who likes to be referred to as Prince Charming as often as possible? Quite possibly the best costume duo of 2009… Our costumes rocked this year, and although I have no idea how we are going to top that this year, I am excited at the challenge.
- Restaurant Window Seating — On our three day trip to Seattle in June, I think it happened to us just about every night where we were seated in what could be considered the best seats at the restaurant. In Seattle we went to a Mexican restaurant on the 4th or 5th floor of a building, and we were put right next to the window, giving us a complete view of the downtown area. Sick! In San Francisco, we were seated on the second floor window overlooking the bay and Alcatraz… Sick! Now, if I was by myself, I would surely been escorted near the bathroom, or the janitor’s closet, but with Eileen, I also get the royal treatment (she gets it regardless of whether I am there or not) .
- Golden Birthday — One of the bright spots of my summer in Seattle was the fact that I got to come home for a week to celebrate Eileen’s birthday. This wasn’t just any birthday though, this was her Golden Birthday… that once in a lifetime event where the stars align and your age is the same number as the date you were born… Eileen turned 24 on the 24th of July this year, and we made no attempt at holding back on a birthday as grand as this… We had golden M&Ms, golden wrapping paper, events, food, and drinks every night… It was truly over the top, and I don’t I would have wanted to celebrate her birthday any other way… Although every day with Eileen is as great as the last, Eileen’s Golden Birthday week (yep, we turned the day into a week) was one of the best weeks I have ever had…
- Our Songs — Although I am by no means an expert on the subject, I am going to guess that a lot, if not all people in relationships have certain songs that remind them of the special person in their life… I have several with Eileen, and they’re songs that even if I am not with her, I will hear on the loudspeaker at a mall, or in the radio on the way to school, or whatever… reminders that there is someone out there who I would like to think loves me as much as I love her… Some of our favorites include Tyrone Well’s ‘Sea Breeze’(apparently written by some guy named Sam), Toby Keith’s ‘Rock You Baby’, Jason Mraz’s ‘Im Yours’, and the list continues :)… I even have the songs in playlist form on my ipod for that emotional boost during the day… cheesy yes, but definitely sincere
- “You’re Too Rough With Me!” — Eileen is one to be quick with throwing punches, snapping towels, and other playful methods of torture, yet can barely take getting hit by a pillow or other attack method without telling me how rough I am with her, and that she isn’t a boy, and that I should be nicer to her. One, I would never hit another guy with a pillow (unless it had rocks in it), and two, her battle cry is the reason I keep doing it… It’s fun, and I love it
- Peanut Butter Moo’d — Just a small thing, but I love the fact that I can go to Jamba Juice and not only not get crap for getting probably the worst thing on the menu in the form of a 24 oz cup of deliciousness, but Eileen will almost always share the smoothie with me… Man, those things are good
- Gary Allan Concert — With cowboy hat already in hand because of my purchase at Stagecoach earlier that year, Eileen and I were set for Gary Allan’s concert way back in May 2008. We had a great time, except Gary Allan didn’t play a song which we both really wanted him to play, prompting me to shake my fist at him for at least a solid minute from the back part of the audience… I don’ t think he saw me thought because he never did play it… Oh well, we still had a great time, and it brought his song “The One” onto the front of my playlists for some time after that…
- Painting Ceramics — Apparently one of Eileen’s college jobs was working at a local ceramic painting store (which is now out of business), and during this time she developed the knack and a love for painting ceramics. Naturally then, we have spent several Sunday afternoons going to the other local ceramic store Color Me Mine to paint. While I wasn’t necessarily thrilled going the first time, I found that once I started getting into it, its actually quite fun (I just don’t tell any of my friends where I was that day). That, and Eileen is an absolute genius with her water colors; the first thing she made was my aforementioned key dish for her room which had a picture of me and her on in it cartoon form, and on our second pass, a four sided purse change jar… Guys, if you have read this far through my enormous blog, take note: going painting with your lady will probably earn you some brownie points, and you might actually enjoy yourself too
- The Hammock — The night we stayed in San Francisco last year we stayed at this hotel that situated hammocks all over the grounds. So, inevitably we took some time exploring the intricacies of how to quickly and easily get too people on one of those things. Hilarity ensues
It was so much fun though that we ended up buying a hammock for ourselves for Christmas this year… It was funny; I had Eileen bring over all her mom’s tools for what I thought was going to be a painstaking building process, but probably in less than 10 minutes (and with no tools), we had the hammock built in my living room(it was too cold to put outside, and still is)… Let’s just say I cannot wait until it gets a bit warmer outside! - Ice Skating — One of our definite todo list items was to go ice skating at some point, and we finally made that happen last December. Several memorable things happened that day… one, we were talking about our mutual friend Eric and how he plays hockey, and lo and behold he was there playing a hockey game (it was pretty random actually), and then our experience in sharing what was quite possibly the worst hot chocolate ever… Seriously nasty, but all in all the day was great… Neither of us really fell on the ice, although I am not going to claim we were ready for the Olympic tryouts or anything… just a fun day.
- Fun Nicknames — Every relationship has them, but ours are better… nerdface, goober, dork, booster seat, short round, princess, prince charming… in fact, there’s rarely a time when I actually call (what’s her name again) by her real name, but I love it
- Andy Davis Concert — “I’ve been conniving, devising a plan, to say something brilliant to this girl”… One of my favorite lines in one of Andy Davis’s songs… I discovered Andy Davis through iTunes last year, and pretty much got hooked on his music (look him up, he’s great)… At some point I got Eileen interested in his music too, and as luck would have it he came to Hollywood to play at a local club, and so we took advantage… My favorite part of the night: when Andy played a cover of Etta James’ ‘At Last’. So good.
- Comedy — Eileen has that knack to make me laugh every time I see her… we have very similar senses of humor, and I love it… We both appreciate stand up comedy (”Hot Pocket!”), the same movies and quoting them all the time(”She was a ho, fo’ sho”), and each others jokes, no matter how corny and cheesy they are; it’s sometimes the cheesier jokes that make us laugh more. Whether its Eileen referring to me using “The Goog” or making her goofy police/ambulance siren noise, she just has that knack, and I love that probably more than anything else about her.
- Our Set of Ornaments — As the Christmas season creeped up, Eileen bought me several meaningful ornaments to put on the Christmas tree I would buy for my apartment. And, since I actually didn’t own any ornaments, we set out on a Target adventure to get more. With the exception of the standard colored bulbs to fill out the tree, all the ornaments we bought this past year had some meaning to them (and probably have an implied place on this century list somewhere)… Our first Christmas together was amazing, and our ornaments certainly reflect that.
- Protector of Her Friends at Bars — It’s actually really funny when we go to bars and some less than desirable guy comes up to one of Eileen’s friends and tries to hit the jackpot… because inevitably what will happen is Eileen will join the conversation in some way, shape, or form, and completely discourage and intimidate the guy. “No Chance!” is the mantra I’ve heard most often, and its absolutely hilarious and cute at the same time. While Eileen’s friends are too nice not to send the guy off to the minor leagues to try to score there, Eileen is ready and willing to send them packing… Its great
- The “Don’t Stop Believin” Dance — This is another one of those things that you just have to witness to really appreciate. Eileen has developed and mastered a dance to Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin that will blow most people’s socks off… In the beginning, she was actually quite hesitant to do the dance in front of me… in fact I didn’t even think it was real until one of her cheerleaders showed me the dance on her digital camera. I have since seen the dance live on numerous occasions, and have enjoyed every last performance…
- Friends Like Her — Just as much as I think it is important for her friends to I’m good enough around Eileen, I also really am really content that every one of my friends who has met her as found Eileen as beautiful and charming as I do… Now, the comments I get are not normally passed down to Eileen, but I’ve told her before, and I will say it again, I get people telling me how good I’ve got it all the time… And I reply with the same answer all the time: Yep, she is amazing…
- Coffee First Date — We talk about our first date all the time because in short it was the day my life changed… Our first date came after about a week of emailing each other back and forth on Facebook. It was pretty clear she could keep up in an email conversation, and I was really eager to see how she would do in real life. She will tell everyone that I was “late” to the coffee shop we met at, but I am convinced I was on time, and she was maybe 20 seconds early… that’s it. I honestly didn’t think it we were going to be there for any longer than about an hour, but 3 1/2 hours later, we were still sitting there talking about a whole bunch of random things… Europe, cheerleading, school, food, you name it… Eileen even paid for my drink that night! A chai latte, which was really good
Our first date was the scene of the now infamous completely shredded coffee cup, which happened because Eileen for a while looked quite nervous… Not that I wasn’t either… In front of me was a gorgeous girl that seemed to be handling my attempt at humor the entire night (truth is, her sense of humor matches mine pretty perfectly), there was no way I wasn’t going to be at least slightly nervous. Still, she mad the night easy on me, and I hope I did the same. Before we left, we even set up a little dinner date at my apartment, AND I got big hug… Now I am sitting in front of my computer writing to both of my loyal readers everything I love about this girl. Not a bad night
- Ruby Red Slippers at Wicked — You have to love a girl that dresses the part when going to see Wicked the Musical… Eileen was decked out in a sexy black dress and ruby red slippers a la Dorothy… I had to stop counting how many people commented on how great her shoes were. Just don’t ask me pictures because Eileen forgot the camera (I am shaking my fist right now…).
- The Office — So we may not completely agree on every single TV show out there or how much TV to watch in a given time frame, but we both definitely agree that The Office is by and far the best comedy on television. In fact, I thought I owned the title of Biggest Fan of the show, but then I quickly learn that not only does Eileen own a Dwight bobblehead doll, but she also has an ‘I Love Jim’ mug. Wow! I found my soulmate! The Office is one the constants in our not so constant lives… We usually end up watching the current show twice the week it airs, and quote the best lines the rest of the time. During the Christmas season, we ended up buying ALL of the seasons on DVD when they were on sale, and watching not only every single show again, but also all the deleted scenes, outtakes, and special features. Now that’s what you call two diehard fans…
- Her Brother — She may get annoyed or frustrated with him every once in while, but I think that goes without saying for siblings. Getting to know her brother has been great… he’s a funny guy, genuinely smart, and makes a great workout partner. Plus, we have Survival of the Fittest to make any event more interesting, and what’s a night without the game where you make the ‘Ok’ sign with your thumb and forefinger and try to get the other people look at it under your waist?! I love the fact that her brother has in a way taken me in as a member of the family, as evidenced by his interest in making fun of me at any opportunity he can get… All in good fun though
- Friday Night Dinners — Pretty much every Friday we go out with some subset of Eileen’s family out to dinner, usually to a Denny’s or a Coco’s or even a Panera Bread. Eileen has a strong sense of family values and I think that it’s great she likes to take at least one day out of her busy week to eat with them. To top it off and invite me every week makes it that much nicer. One of my favorite dinner nights happened at Denny’s… We seemed to have several different waiters “helping” us, each of who would come directly after the other to ask us how everything was. Kind of surreal. What was even weirder was they started bussing our table before we were even done… Yep, they got a several pennies arranged as an upside down smiley face for their tip…
- Matching clothes — One night Eileen showed up at my apartment in almost the exact same clothing (minus several sizes)… We have since deemed that night Matching Polo Night, and when we remember, try to go out with coordinating get ups going… Cheesy yes, but I love it.
- Newspaper Picture at Stagecoach — About a month into our relationship, Eileen invited me to Stagecoach with her, a full weekend country concert way out near Nogales. Everyone and their mom goes to this thing, and so the newspapers do quite an extensive amount of coverage on the event. In any case, on the second day of concerts I decided to take a little nap to prepare for the rest of the night concerts, and as luck would have it, the guy from the newspaper decided to take a picture of me, and Eileen, who was looking on. I awoke to see Eileen talking to some random guy (the photographer) and when I asked her who that was, she told me it was the guy from the newspaper. I hesitated to believe her, but sure enough on the internet the next day there are pictures of Stagecoach, including all today’s hottest country stars, and me… looking super lame. Good thing Eileen didn’t know me as well at that point otherwise she would have given the guy completelt wrong information and made fun of me until the end of time.
Whew, I am tired! In the interest of sparing my readers a whole bunch of cheesy lines, and even more reading, I will leave it at this… Eileen is all that I have ever wanted, and much more than I ever deserve. I love her more than any list on a website could ever convey, and I hope she knows I want to be with her always.
